Barbara Karant

Nationally known in the design, art, and architecture communities, Barbara trained at RISD and SAIC. She is a published author, architectural and interiors photographer, artist and educator. During her career, she has photographed for a broad range of notable architects, interior and graphic designers, and manufacturers both in the US and abroad. She is based in Chicago.

Her photography has been widely exhibited, and her imagery is represented in many private and permanent collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the St. Louis Art Museum, MoMA, the Stanford University Art Museum, the Sheldon Museum of Art, and the Chrysler Museum. 

Barbara has taught at Columbia College, Harrington College of Design, College of DuPage and Loyola University. She photographs, mentors, critiques, consults, and speaks regularly about her projects to students and professionals alike.

She is the creator of two books, Greyhounds and Small Dog Big Dog and the photographer of Within the Fairy Castle. Her next book 820 Ebony/Jet: Visions of an African American Icon, The Johnson Publishing Company has an anticipated publication date of fall 2025.

In Barbara’s spare time she is passionately committed to working to educate the public as to the marvels of living with the retired racing greyhound and actively involved with their adoption and placement through Greyhounds Only.

Barbara has a vast file of imagery available for both exhibition and stock usage. All of her photography is available in limited editions and printed and mounted to archival standards.
